Mimi Webb ‘Confessions’ Album Review by Graham Finney.
For British singer-songwriter Mimi Webb, her journey, while not quite meteoric, has been impressive to say the least. Bouncing onto the scene back in 2023 with her BRIT-nominated debut ‘Amelia’, Mimi Webb found herself becoming one of the exciting new names on the UK pop scene. So, with the release of ‘Amelia’s follow-up ‘Confessions’, is the singer-songwriter about to take the pop world by storm?
Taking the lead from the big-hitters in modern pop, ‘Confessions’ finds Webb opening up for what she describes as her most vulnerable work to date. Filled with themes of heartbreak, empowerment, and self-discovery, ‘Confessions’ is a modern-day pop album that boasts all the elements to make it a hugely successful release.
Join the album and its creator on this journey of self-discovery, and you will thankfully find no giggly, girly pop. Webb may be a pop star at heart, but tracks like ‘Narcissist’ and ‘Love You For Me’ find her sounding classy, self-assured, and, in the case of the latter, brimming with confidence both in her storytelling and her ability to write intelligent, modern pop.
The emotional ‘You Don’t Look At Me The Same, one of the standout tracks on the album, reveals the more mature side of Webb. However, having worked with her labelmate and award-winner, Meghan Trainor, on the recent single ‘Mind Reader’, it should come as no surprise to find that Webb has upped her game when it comes to her songwriting for this album.
That being said, for all the maturity Webb shows throughout this album, there are moments like ‘I Met A Boy’, ‘Side Effects’ and ‘Crashing Out’, where she demonstrates how, where needed, she knows to turn up the heat on the dancefloor a degree or two.
‘Confessions’ wraps up with the title track, which, unsurprisingly, is one of the more vulnerable tracks on this collection of songs. Bringing Mimi Webb’s second album to a conclusion, it’s the perfect way for the rising star of British pop to sign off a record which shows how much she has grown as a songwriter and a person while, at the same time, maintaining that ability to write a good modern pop song.
