Sophie Ellis-Bextor ‘Perimenopop’ Album Review by Graham Finney.
‘Perimenopop’, the new album from the British Queen of disco pop, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, might be the start of a new chapter in her story as her debut for new label Decca but, for all intents, this collection of songs primarily celebrates her life, and the joy her music brings with it.
A playful collection of songs, ‘Perimenopop’ is the work of an artist comfortable in their own sound. It doesn’t offer anything other than what you would expect from Sophie Ellis-Bextor at this stage in her career.
While the album celebrates this stage of her life, ‘Perimenopop’ also doesn’t find the British disco queen shying away from what she has made a career out of. Tracks like opener “Relentless Love” and “Diamond in the Dark” are guaranteed dancefloor fillers, packed with synths and pulsing, energetic beats. Recent single “Taste” sees her collaborate with singer-songwriter/producer MNEK for a slick slice of disco pop.
The title, a play on the world “Perimenopause”, is an album brimming with a confident but fun attitude. “Stay On Me” has a simplistic pulse throughout the song while “Dolce Vita” is just prime disco pop, all shimmery and sassy, exactly what you would want from someone like Sophie Ellis-Bextor.
Given the confidence bubbling through heartbeat of ‘Perimenopop’, it is obvious that the Sophie Ellis-Bextor disco machine shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, rather than growing graceful with age, ‘Perimenopop’ is an album for all those people who still look forward to hitting the dancefloor on a Saturday night.
Bearing that in mind, “Freedom of the Night” could be the anthem Ellis-Bextor’s legions of fans will crank up as they’re preparing to dance the night away while, album closer “Don’t Know What You’ve Got Until It’s Gone”, brings the album to a classy mid-tempo conclusion.
Eight albums into her solo career, ‘Perimenopop’, as a representation of her story and the start of a new chapter, couldn’t be more perfect. It’s much more than that though. ‘Perimenopop’ is the sound of a confident Sophie Ellis-Bextor ready to disco dance her way into the next chapter of her story.
