We’re taking it back to 1993, when Michael Jackson performed at the halftime show at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. This was another one of the most-watched events in American television history, with a total of 133.4 million viewers.

After being introduced by the voice of James Earl Jones, Michael Jackson and a body double appeared simultaneously on top of the stage’s two jumbotrons.

Michael Jackson performed a medley that included “Billie Jean,” “Jam, and “Black or White.” He was then joined by a group of 3,000 Los Angeles children to sing “We are the World” and “Heal the World.”

Whitney Houston – Super Bowl XXV

The best music performances can’t be discussed without mentioning Whitney Houston’s 1991 performance of the “Star-Spangled Banner” show in Tampa, FL. Although it wasn’t the halftime show, it was equally, if not more powerful than any Super Bowl performance to this day.

For this performance, Whitney Houston sang the national anthem, which was dedicated to those serving in the Persian Gulf War, making this performance a truly important one.

She appears in a white jumpsuit and a matching headband adorned with red and blue stripes. An orchestra loudly played with her, but her powerful voice carried beautifully over it. After singing, Air Force F-16 jets flew over the crown to honor those that were serving in the war.
