The main Walking Dead series may have finished, but the franchise is going nowhere. Since the flagship offering ended, there have been various spinoffs, each of which has received critical acclaim. Now, there could be plans to adapt the comics in a new and surprising way – as a musical.

Michonne actress Danai Gurira has a long history as a playwright, and she has expressed an interest in bringing The Walking Dead to Broadway. According to some reports, lead showrunner Scott Gimple is also open to the idea.

Gurira and Gimple Have Discussed the Possibility

Gurira’s idea to bring The Walking Dead to the stage isn’t out of the question, as she has a proven track record in theatre. Indeed, the actress wrote the plays In the Continuum, The Convert, Familiar and Eclipsed. She picked up an Obie award for In the Continuum, and Eclipsed was nominated for six Tony Awards including Best Play.

Creating a stage version of The Walking Dead could be huge, and could completely shake up the theatre industry. The zombie genre has never taken off on the stage, but a release of a spinoff of the hit AMC show could completely change that. Indeed, a bold move like this could lead other playwrights to get more ambitious with the type of content they try to turn into stage performances.

Franchise Keeps Expanding in Innovative Ways

One of the main reasons why The Walking Dead has been so successful is because the franchise has branched out in a variety of different ways. By doing this, it’s able to attract the attention of diverse audiences, and funnel more people back to the main series. For example, when The Walking Dead was first airing, the Telltale Games title of the same name immersed players in the game’s universe from a different character’s perspective. It complemented the show, and didn’t take anything away from the main story.

There’s also a range of bingo slots related to The Walking Dead, such as The Walking Dead LuckyTap from Playtech. The game features various characters from the series and, like the Telltale Games title, allows people to enjoy the zombie world from a different perspective. With the franchise having expanded in these innovative ways already, it’s not out of the question for it to break the mould and be adapted for the stage as well.

More to Come from Walking Dead Universe

Regardless of whether the stage show goes ahead or not, there is definitely more to come from The Walking Dead franchise. The latest spinoffs have spawned sequel seasons of their own, and introduced new characters that could be explored in further spinoffs as well.

One thing that shows like The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon have shown is that there’s plenty more to explore in this zombie universe. A new series could check out other locations and see how they have been affected by the outbreak. There could even be an option to jump forward in time and see what life is like much later, perhaps with society moving on and learning to live symbiotically with the undead.
