The Brighton folk-rock band The Levellers delivered a high-energy live performance on October 31, 2026, at the historic Empress Ballroom inside the Winter Gardens in Blackpool. The concert served as a key stop on their celebratory UK and European tour, which marked the 35th anniversary of their seminal 1991 album, Levelling the Land. Supporting acts for the evening included the alternative rock band Ned’s Atomic Dustbin and the punk duo The Meffs.
Formed in Brighton in 1988, The Levellers built their career on a distinctive, fast-paced fusion of folk, punk, and alternative rock. The band’s classic lineup features vocalist and guitarist Mark Chadwick, bassist Jeremy Cunningham, violin player Jon Sevink, drummer Charlie Heather, and multi-instrumentalist Simon Friend. Taking their name from the 17th-century radical political movement, they became prominent figures in British indie and counter-cultural music during the early 1990s. Their long-standing commercial high points include the chart-topping 1995 studio album Zeitgeist and the multi-platinum status of Levelling the Land.
The Halloween night event in Blackpool focused heavily on the tracklist of that breakthrough 1991 record. The band performed their signature anthems that define their acoustic-driven, left-wing political catalog, including “One Way,” “15 Years,” “Far From Home,” and the politically charged “Battle of the Beanfield”. Driven by the frantic pace of Sevink’s fiddle and Cunningham’s animated bass style, the performance maintained the raw punk energy that has sustained the group’s grassroots following for nearly four decades.
The choice of the Empress Ballroom provided an atmospheric, resonant backdrop for the band’s folk-punk wall of sound. True to their reputation as relentless touring musicians, the band delivered an unembellished, tight set that relied entirely on musical cohesion rather than gimmicks. The Blackpool audience, spanning multiple generations of fans, was treated to a showcase of historical social commentary and upbeat rhythms that proved the timelessness of their music. Moving seamlessly from track to track, the band closed out October by demonstrating that their message and speed remain completely intact.
