Sometimes you need to find the inner confidence to tell someone I’m ‘Done With U’. It could be a boyfriend who never quite tells the truth, a friendship that you gradually realise is one-way, or a boss who pushes you too far. And that’s something the international chart-topping, Gold-certified Mae Stephens demonstrates with swaggering intent on her new single ‘Done With U’. The single release is also accompanied by the news that Mae will go out on headline tour of the UK next year, kicking off in Norwich on the 18th March and concluding in London on 1st April at Lower Third. Listen to ‘Done With U’ HERE.
Bold, provocative pop is Mae Stephens’ speciality, which is something underlined by ‘Done With U’. The larger-than-life personality of her voice doesn’t hold back as she takes aim at someone who has crossed her for the last time. That message is packaged in a lean, addictive alt-pop anthem which alchemises vivacious beats, hefty bass and an instant earworm synth hook. It’s a playful statement born from experience, but one that will inspire people to take a stand against their nemesis when it really matters.
The ‘Done WIth U’ video is a playful satire on the world of TV talent shows. Sitting on the judging panel, Mae is unimpressed by the try-hard antics of the contestants who are competing to be her boyfriend: a jacked bodybuilder; a man doing acrobatics with a firework in a place no firework should go; and an unsettling human/horse hybrid. While they do their best to win her over, Mae is instead drawn to the studio floor manager who is simply trying to keep the show on track. It was directed by Willow Hazel.
Still just 22-years-old, Mae Stephens has already experienced a remarkable amount at such a young age. Music has always been her therapy – something which you can still see in her fearless, truth-telling lyrics – especially during her early life, when she was bullied at school for her neurodivergences. Heading into adulthood, she worked in customer services in ASDA – her lifelong ambition of becoming an artist seemingly an impossible dream.
