Dream pop purveyours Moon Panda return today with the new single ‘Superstore’ from their upcoming third album, Dumb Luck, due 26th September via Moon Panda/Virgin Music Group. Listen HERE. Pre-Order Dumb Luck on all formats HERE.
Discussing the single, vocalist Maddy Myers offers, “‘Superstore’ is about the micro moments of wanting to convince your partner of what you can be for them. I told our producer I wanted the chorus to feel like that scene in the movie ‘Challengers’ where they are outside and the trash is blowing everywhere. Total chaos and longing.”
Recorded largely in Myers’ and guitarist Gustav Moltke’s home studio, with bassist/keyboardist George Godwin producing, and Josh Cabitac behind the kit, the band handed off the nearly finished material to producer Adam Thein (Djo), with whom they worked previously on 2023’s Sing Spaceship, Sing!. The final product is their most sensuous work to date, with hints of The Cardigans or even The Carpenters – somewhat blissed out while also tackling life’s emotional challenges.
Since 2023, Myers and Moltke left Copenhagen for Maddy’s Southern California and started a family – two events that understandably had a profound impact on Dumb Luck. “Holy moly, becoming a mom is the best thing to ever happen to me but damn, those first months postpartum were so hard,” notes Myers. “The hormonal rollercoaster let me experience the heartache and devastation of someone going through times much worse than I’ve experienced – and that darkness shows in some of the lyrics. It was like losing yourself, your creative identity, and then finding it again in a completely new way. And it’s kind of sad…because you realize you’ll never be the same person that you were again. But then that’s okay because you’re growing and changing and opening up space to be more.”
Dumb Luck is Moon Panda’s “band album”, written and recorded with Godwin and Cabitac. The title, Dumb Luck, is a partial nod to this, a reference to the pure good fortune of being able to create art with three other individuals who came together living in different parts of the globe, but somehow making it work, and coming together closer than ever before.
