With dream pop purveyors Moon Panda‘s third album Dumb Luck now on the horizon – out September 26, the California/Danish four-piece have today released a fourth single from the record, ‘Penny’. Listen HERE. Pre-Order Dumb Luck HERE.
Discussing ‘Penny’, and her many personality quirks, vocalist Maddy Myers notes, “This one has had so many lives! It started kind of Beatles-y and then went real heavy like Pixies meets Tame Impala, which was so fun to play, but ultimately we chilled it out. I don’t know who Penny is but damn, she’s trouble.”
Recorded largely in Myers’ and guitarist Gustav Moltke’s home studio, with bassist/keyboardist George Godwin producing, and Josh Cabitac behind the kit, the band handed off the nearly finished material to producer Adam Thein (Djo), with whom they worked previously on 2023’s Sing Spaceship, Sing!. The final product is their most sensuous work to date, with hints of The Cardigans or even The Carpenters – somewhat blissed out while also tackling life’s emotional challenges.
“‘Dumb Luck’ is probably the most collaborative album we’ve made as a band. It has little pieces of all of us within it and feels really special,” adds Myers. “Like this little mix of all our different characteristics – it’s got my softness and introspection, Gustav’s humour and explosiveness, Josh’s thoughtful precision, and George’s wonky wizardry just kind of blankets over everything. I hope people can feel the care and love that went into these songs that mean so much to us as a collective.”
Dumb Luck is Moon Panda’s “band album”, written and recorded with Godwin and Cabitac. The title, Dumb Luck, is a partial nod to this, a reference to the pure good fortune of being able to create art with three other individuals who came together living in different parts of the globe, but somehow making it work, and coming together closer than ever before.
“There are many moments in ‘Dumb Luck’ where I let my mind take me to the possibility of losing everything that I’d built,” concludes Myers. “Losing my relationship, my creativity…and allowed myself to beg and fight for it to go back to the way it was. Cause again, that’s the thing about having a baby. You enter this new chapter and you mourn your old one for a moment. But at the same exact time you look so much forward to this new life you’ve created.”
