Nerina Pallot has been building an empowering second chapter to her career, a return fuelled by connecting directly with fans and continuing to craft a catalogue of accomplished and relatable songs. As her following is now bigger than ever – as evidenced by playing her largest headline show to date at London’s Royal Albert Hall on May 31st – she now announces the May 29th release of ‘Fire Escape Symphonies: The Best Of’.
‘Fire Escape Symphonies’ is the result of Nerina’s new-found realisation that the enduring and acclaimed career that has cultivated is truly something to celebrate. The collection charts Nerina’s entire career trajectory, from having big dreams but little hope of fulfilling them with ‘Patience’ from her debut album, to scoring her first big crossover hit with the eternally relevant ‘Everybody’s Gone To War’She has continued to reach new audiences deep into her career with her take on Joy Division’s ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’, which hit #1on Shazam and went Top 10 on Spotify from organic streams after featuring in ‘Normal People’. Another high profile TV moment came when ‘Circus’ featured in the Amazon Prime series ‘Modern Love’.
Along the way, Nerina revisits all manner of other songs with deep significance. There’s ‘Idaho’, a live staple which she later named her own label after, the Ivor Novello-nominated ‘Sophia’, and personal favourites ‘This Heart is A Lonely Hunter’ and ‘Regrets’. Its newer songs highlight her continued growth as a songwriter too, see ‘Madison’ and ‘Only The Old Songs’.
This flashback to Nerina’s story so far closes by looking to the future with the new song ‘Come Bring The Sun’. The track that best represents the album’s title, ‘Come Bring The Sun’ possesses an opening orchestral march that sets the scene for her beautifully expressive voice to draw parallels between the changing seasons and the swirling highs-and-lows of life’s adventure. It also builds towards a show-stopping finale, with a crescendo layered with sax, strings, piano and gospel-style harmonies.
Nerina says, “’Come Bring The Sun’ was written a few years ago, during the pandemic, and recorded during sessions for the ‘I Don’t Know What I’m Doing’ album, but it felt too different from that album to fit on it. It is a call to arms to have hope, that even when the world seems messed up – and has it ever seemed more messed up? – miraculous things can and do happen.”
‘Fire Escape Symphonies: The Best Of’ is now available to pre-order HERE, and will be released on digital, vinyl and CD formats. The gatefold vinyl opens to reveal two other creative contributions from Nerina: an original piece of artwork that she painted specifically for the album, and her own written introduction to the collection. The vinyl features 12 tracks, while the CD and digital versions are extended 20-track editions.
