Irish folk quintet Some One’s Sons return with their eagerly anticipated new single, “Paddy O,” out now. The song is a spirited folk anthem about the struggles of an immigrant labourer, weaving together themes of exploitation, solidarity, and defiant perseverance. This modern folk tale channels the energy of a sea shanty, laced with a sharp, sarcastic edge.
“Paddy O” tells the story of an Irish worker toiling under harsh conditions, facing unjust treatment from the ganger man who withholds pay and exploits desperate labourers – all while deepening his own pockets. Through repetition of the chorus, “Keep the mixer going Paddy O,” the song adopts a socialist call-and-response, both rallying the workers while underscoring the biting irony of exploitation.
The narrative unfolds as the workers unionise, standing firm against threats of a quick dismissal: “You keep this up your notice will be handed”. The victory is celebrated in the song’s lively finale, where Paddy O raises a glass and the spirit of resistance spreads across the land. This blend of humour, history, and heartfelt storytelling reflects Some One’s Sons’ signature approach to Irish folk, balancing tradition with modern relevance. Their latest tune echoes the wit and grit of Poor Paddy and Paddy on the Road, while carrying the protest-song spirit of Pete Seeger.
Known for their powerful live shows and evocative songwriting, the Mullingar five-piece have sold out headline gigs across London, Liverpool, and Dublin. They’re now in the thick of their summer tour, headlining the Fleadh Cheoil Gig Rig on release day, followed by a much-anticipated performance at Electric Picnic.
The single was first teased to audiences during a sneak peek on Ireland AM live on St. Patrick’s Day, adding to the anticipation for what promises to be one of the band’s most compelling releases yet. The song that gave the Sons their TV debut was, remarkably, written over two voice notes.
“Paddy O is a song about the struggles of an immigrant labourer, rising up against exploitation when unity is threatened” says Daniel. “It’s a celebration of resilience and a call to keep going, no matter the odds.”
Fans can stream “Paddy O” on all major platforms starting August 8th. For more information on Some One’s Sons, upcoming tour dates, and new releases, visit their official website.
