Recorded at Orphan Recording Studios and produced by acclaimed Irish producer Gavin Glass, “800 Years” reveals a more atmospheric and cinematic side of The Riptide Movement’s songwriting. The eight-minute track unfolds gradually from a reflective opening into a powerful, chant-like chorus, combining vivid storytelling with a sweeping, emotionally resonant arrangement.

Drawing on themes of inherited memory and the lingering impact of historical conflict, the song explores the idea of intergenerational colonial trauma and the way collective histories can continue to shape identity long after the events themselves have passed. At its core, “800 Years” asks a simple but profound question: how much of the past do we continue to carry forward?

“With everything happening in the world today, it sometimes feels like we haven’t learned much in 800 years,” the band say. “The song came from reflecting on that idea, how history can echo across generations, and how the struggles and stories of the past still shape the present.”

Formed in 2006, The Riptide Movement quickly established themselves as one of Ireland’s most authentic and enduring rock bands, blending indie, folk, blues, and classic rock into a sound uniquely their own. Across five critically acclaimed albums, including the chart-topping Getting Through, the band have delivered fan favourites such as All Works Out, Elephant in the Room, and Changeling.

Renowned for their powerful live performances, the band have shared stages with The Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, and Neil Young, and have collaborated with both the BBC Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra.

As they continue to mark two decades together, “800 Years” stands as one of the band’s most reflective and ambitious recordings to date — a song that looks backward in order to better understand the present.

“800 Years” is available on all major streaming platforms from March 20th, 2026.
