Altered Images’ return in 2022 has been a comeback quite unlike any other. The 39-year space between 1983’s ‘Bite’ and the recent Top 30 set ‘Mascara Streakz’ is one of the longest gaps between albums in pop history, almost matching the length before ABBA’s return in 2021. Clearly relishing a fresh wave of creativity, Clare Grogan wasn’t content to leave it at that. A packed headline tour in September saw her reconnect with fans who were there the first time around as well as plenty of newcomers too, she released the ‘Clara Libre’ EP featuring tropical takes on her classic hits, and was honoured with the Sir Reo Stakis Foundation Living Legend Award at the Scottish Music Awards.
And when you’re on a roll, why leave it there? Altered Images’ today celebrates a phenomenal year by sharing the brand new song ‘The Other Side’. It comes ahead of three landmark shows: Radio 2’s Sounds of the 80s, which will be broadcast live from Stoke’s Regent Theatre tomorrow night; an intimate headline show within the beautiful setting of Glasgow’s St. Luke’s on December 16th; and a celebratory end of year special show as guest to Sophie Ellis-Bextor at Edinburgh’s Night Afore Disco Party at Princes Street Gardens on December 30th.
The new track ‘The Other Side’ was written and recorded during sessions for ‘Mascara Streakz’, yet was reluctantly left off the final album to ensure that it remained the lean, disco-pop machine that fans now know and love. Clare’s signature expressive, ethereal vocal provides the reminder that challenging times will eventually pass. The song’s cocktail of melancholy, nostalgia and hope proves that this isn’t a mere outtake, but a track that very naturally complements the album’s reflective lyrical themes.
Clare says, “I have had a truly magical 2022. I honestly had no idea just how much fun releasing my new album ‘Mascara Streakz’ would be. I’m overwhelmed by the amazing response it’s had. Thank you!
