Marking the beginning of a new chapter for the acclaimed duo, ‘Karaoke Bar’ offers the first glimpse into a record that leans into joy, connection, and a sense of shared experience. Written during travels abroad, the track captures the playful intimacy of a night out, where strangers become companions and music dissolves the space between them.
The ‘Karaoke Bar’ single was born on the Greek island of Hydra, just steps from Leonard Cohen’s former home. Between late-night writing sessions and days spent by the water, Angus and Julia tapped into a creative energy that would come to define the album. “It was a magical time on one of the strangest and most beautiful islands we’ve ever been to,” Angus recalls. Julia adds, “A night at a karaoke bar can hold so much goodness. Everyone has the chance to be heard. And it’s so often more than that — a moment of real connection. We’re together singing with a roomful of strangers, and the things that normally separate us in life fall away.”
Karaoke Bar sees Angus & Julia Stone continuing to evolve their approach to songwriting, recording, and production. Created across multiple locations including Greece, France, and Australia, the album carries with it the spirit of the places, people, and moments that shaped it – a vibrant and expansive body of work that balances intimacy with a sense of scale.
Angus & Julia Stone’s music has long existed on its own dreamy wavelength, shaped by the unique creative bond between brother and sister. Since the release of their debut EP Chocolates and Cigarettes and breakthrough album A Book Like This in 2007, the duo have built a globally revered catalogue. Their sophomore album Down the Way marked a defining moment – debuting at number one in Australia, earning five ARIA Awards, and producing the era-defining single ‘Big Jet Plane’.
