From DIY music videos made with all-female crews, to the front rows filled with young fans who finally feel seen, Girl Group are carving out a space where feminism, friendship, and ferocious pop collide. It’s no wonder they’ve found fans in SZA, who shared one of the group’s videos, and new followers CMAT and Florence Pugh.
Their rise over the past year has been meteoric – since dropping their debut EP Think They’re Looking, Let’s Perform, they have appeared on Elton John’s Rocket Hour, supported Olivia Dean in Paris and London (including two nights at Shepherd’s Bush Empire), and drew the most-attended BBC Introducing crowd at Reading & Leeds 2025. They were crowned winners of Norway’s national TV competition NRK P3 Urørt 2025 (with four members originally coming from Oslo) and their live shows have become a sweaty, rowdy, sisterhood-charged ritual for fans, as the band find their feet in grassroots venues across the country.
Girl Group – Katya, Maria, Thea, Mia and Lil – are not just a band who formed in Liverpool in 2024; they are five best friends pushing against the boy’s-club status quo, reimagining what a girl group can be in 2026 – and having fun while they do it. Born out of “spite” and a shared frustration at the music industry, they have created a space where “girl group” doesn’t mean something invented, branded, and distributed by men – but something woman-made, from writing and producing the records themselves, to performing and creative direction.
With influences ranging from Wolf Alice and Wet Leg, to Sabrina Carpenter and feminist literature and riot grrl bands, Girl Group are not performing a movement, but living it; building not only a fanbase, but an ecosystem of girlhood where joy, protest, community and pleasure can coexist.
