Brighton-based rising musician James Marriott released ‘Romanticise This’ (listen here), the second single from his upcoming debut album Are We There Yet? The official music video for ‘Romanticise This’ is also out now, watch here.
Speaking of the new song, James says, “’Romanticise This’ covers the romanticisation of my suicidal ideation. Written primarily alongside my main writing partner, Jono Suter, I wanted to write a song which to most came across simply as a love song, but that has hidden darker lyrical undertones paired with an explosive, early Coldplay-esque instrumental.”
The new single arrives on the heels of ‘So Long’, which received praise from DORK Magazine who branded James Marriott as “the name on everyone’s lips this summer”.
Some may already know James Marriott from his time spent creating commentary videos on YouTube, where he amassed over 2 million subscribers, and more recently from streaming platform Twitch, where he has over 358k followers. Despite his success as an online content creator, making music has been on James’ mind since he was young.
After attending an ABBA tribute concert with his family as a kid, James decided he wanted to be a musician. He got his hands on a guitar and swiftly taught himself to play it using a Beatles songbook before progressing onto writing his own songs, taking inspiration from indie rock bands including the likes of The Strokes, Bloc Party, and Foals to name a few.
James began to release music independently in 2020 with his debut single ‘Slow Down’ and has since released two successful EPs, 2021’s No Left Brain and 2022’s Bitter Tongues, while continuing to grow his pre-existing fanbase.
This year James has completed a headline tour, where he hit venues including London’s The Garage and Brighton’s Concorde 2, and is due to perform a highly anticipated set on the main stage at Reading & Leeds Festival next month. More live dates to be announced for James Marriott soon as he enters a new musical era.
