Kings of Leon is an American rock band formed in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1999. The lineup consists of brothers Caleb (lead vocals, guitar), Nathan (drums), and Jared Followill (bass), alongside their cousin Matthew Followill (lead guitar). The band’s name pays tribute to their grandfather, Leon.
Initially, the group gained traction in the United Kingdom and Europe with an energetic blend of Southern rock and garage rock revival. Their first three albums—Youth & Young Manhood (2003), Aha Shake Heartbreak (2004), and Because of the Times (2007)—established a loyal international following.
They achieved massive global, mainstream success with their 2008 multi-platinum album, Only by the Night. Driven by the smash hit singles “Sex on Fire” and “Use Somebody,” the record propelled them to arena-headliner status and earned them four Grammy Awards. They have continued to evolve their alternative sound across subsequent releases, including Can We Please Have Fun (2024)
