Leeds three-piece LOUX have announced their second single, COOL, will now be released on 11 May 2018. It follows their debut MEET ME HALFWAY, released in November last year, which saw the band make impressive inroads at both press and radio so early in their existence.
COOL is partly inspired by the novel Gone Girl and the concept of some women – so called ‘cool girls’ – who go along with what men demand of them with little concern for themselves. Singer and lyricist Jordan approaches the subject by relating an uncomfortable, personal situation for her with a withering sarcasm that defiantly determines she is indeed not one of those women.
As the lyrics subtly reveal: “Maybe you’re waiting for a girl to be laid back with you / Someone to be cool / The thing about that kinda girl is she doesn’t exist / What am I supposed to do? / Maybe I’d be better by myself? / ‘Cos when you’re with me you’re wishing I was somebody else”.
The song itself – a sassy, dancey, slightly moody amalgam of 90s pop synths and hooks – continues the band’s carefully subtle style of sound textures, effects-laden guitars, minimal yet warm drum rhythms and hypnotic vocals.
LOUX played their first ever show in July of last year. Their second show, which took place the very next day, was at the Blue Dot Festival at Jodrell Bank, where they shared a bill with Alt-J, Orbital, Pixies and Leftfield, which is some achievement. Later last year, live videos of two unreleased tracks, DARLING and LUNGS, were filmed at the stunning Victoria Baths in Manchester. You can watch them here:
With so much achieved in so little time, with passionate support from BBC Radio Introducing, with a growing live reputation, and with several observers speaking of the band in the same breath as the aforementioned Alt-J, LOUX are quietly and confidently becoming a band to be reckoned with.
