Mae Stephens recently told followers that she thought she had written “the delulu song of the summer” and today’s release of the new single ‘Delusional’ proves that she was correct. It comes as she has spent recent weeks translating her fiercely loyal online following into real world connection with a packed headline tour, a special guest appearance at G-A-Y, and a set at the first UK edition of the Anti Social Camp showcase. Listen HERE.
As we’ve come to expect from Mae, she puts everything into ‘Delusional’ – that soulful vocal gift, her diaristic desire to share every inner thought and her whirlwind of personality. The result is pure pop fun, with a sweet piano melody and swooping, intricately crafted vocal harmonies making for an instant earworm of a song. As for the lyrics? Well, we’ve all been delusional about someone – but you just don’t tend to realise how far you’ve gone until it’s over.
The accompanying video matches the sheer fun factor of the song. You can’t take your eyes off of Mae’s magnetic performance, which is set in a Technicolour alternate reality that recalls the B*Witched ‘C’est La Vie’ aesthetic – a neat metaphor for realising you’re not quite living in reality.
Alongside ‘Delusional’ comes confirmation of a new UK headline tour in partnership with Music Venue Trust. The Liveline Fund is dedicated to ensuring the best new and developing live music reaches communities across the country. Through partnerships with artists, promoters, and venues, Liveline is establishing new approaches to reinvigorate local live music scenes.
