The new album from Skerryvore ‘Beautiful Mistakes’ instigated a wave of anticipation amongst their devoted following, especially as the announcement was combined with the rollicking lead single ‘Fly’ and details of an extensive autumn headline tour. Now they further fuel expectations for the album’s release on November 6th by sharing its second single, ‘Singing Up In Heaven’. Listen HERE.
Skerryvore’s melting point of their Scottish heartland roots with folk-pop accessibility is particularly affecting on ‘Singing Up In Heaven’. It is a beautifully poignant tribute to vocalist / guitarist Alec Dalglish’s late beloved father, uplifted by buoyant percussion, bright acoustic strums and characterful swoons on the accordion. There’s a particularly touching surprise, too, as the track segues into a clip of his father crooning.
‘Singing Up In Heaven’ adds to the belief that ‘Beautiful Mistakes’ will be Skerryvore’s finest album to date. As this song shows, it’s their most personal work so far with Alec delving into the most introspective and vulnerable writing that we’ve heard from him. Meanwhile, working with Jamie Squire (The 1975) encouraged them to latch onto the organic chemistry in the studio rather than focusing on the finer details. Perhaps most importantly, they prioritised the freedom simply making great music, without overthinking what people would expect from them or what might receive the biggest reaction. Naturally, that unlocked the live element of their sound on record – the environment where they have received the biggest reaction.
The result is that ‘Beautiful Mistakes’ has everything needed to build on the achievements earned by their previous record, 2023’s ‘Tempus’. It hit #1 on both the Official Scottish and Folk Album Charts, took them into the Top 40 of the Official Albums Chart for the first time, and landed the most substantial airplay of their career.
