Electronic music pioneers – TANGERINE DREAM – are heading to Manchester’s Albert Hall on 10 November 2023.
Founded in 1967 by Edgar Froese in Berlin, the group established themselves with their groundbreaking 1974 album ‘Phaedra’, which became a milestone in electronic music history.
Over the last 53 years, Tangerine Dream have released more than one hundred records. Their early ‘Pink Years’ albums had a pivotal role in the development of Krautrock, while their ‘Virgin Years; albums helped define what became known as the Berlin School of electronic music.
Although the group released countless studio and live recordings, a substantial number of their fans were introduced to Tangerine Dream by their film soundtracks which total over 60 and include ‘Sorcerer’ (William Friedkin), ‘Thief’ (Michael Mann), ‘Risky Business’, ‘The Keep, Firestarter’, ‘Legend’ (Ridley Scott), ‘Near Dark’, ‘Shy People’, and ‘Miracle Mile’. In 2013, the band also composed the original score for Rockstar’s best-selling video game Grand Theft Auto V.
The current iteration of the band features Thorsten Quaeschning as musical director, Hoshiko Yamane and, since 2020, Paul Frick. In recent times, the band has returned to the classic sequencer sound of their origins.
Their latest studio album ‘Raum’ was released in 2022, entering the German Album Chart at #39 and the Official UK Dance Album Chart at #1. The record marked the band’s most successful release since the 1980s and attracted high praise from the press with Resident Advisor proclaiming it as “the best Tangerine Dream record in decades”.
The seven-track ‘Raum’, which opens with the 17-minute “In 256 Zeichen”, is the second studio album that the current Tangerine Dream line-up have recorded since the passing of the founder Edgar Froese in 2015. In 2017, the band also released the album ‘Quantum Gate’, which was largely based on ideas and musical sketches left by Froese, and released to much critical acclaim.
Performing material from throughout their career, from the early “Virgin Years” to the most recent “Quantum Years”, Tangerine Dream will headline the Albert Hall, Manchester on Friday 10 November 2023. Final tickets on sale now here.
