The new album sees Tom Odell entering a rich new musical chapter in his notable journey as a singer, songwriter, musician and producer. Armed with a newfound sense of freedom and creative control, Black Friday is a hypnotic kaleidoscope of organically constructed songs, recorded simply with Tom in his studio, guitar in lap, singing and recording the songs in the same manner they were written, with pure authenticity.
The delicate drums and bass, along with beautiful string arrangements round out the intimacy and longing that permeate throughout. Black Friday will be a welcome return for long-standing devotees, while also winning over new legions of fans. His fanbase continues to grow exponentially, via viral excitement while his biggest North American tour yet is currently in full swing.
Tom comments on the new album; “I recorded these songs between last winter and the spring of this year. I tried to leave them as ‘unproduced’ as possible with the hope that they would be the truest reflection of how I felt in that time. These songs mean a lot to me, and I can’t wait for you to hear them.”
New single ‘Somebody Else’ was written by Odell and co-produced by Odell and long-time collaborator Cityfall. The track opens with a delicate piano tease, followed by an understated arrangement of emotive vocals and sparse acoustic guitar. Tom’s graceful piano subtly elevates the poignant lyrics – “Blow a kiss. I am happy that you exist. Feel that light-headed feeling that I’ve missed…I wonder where you are you’re probably waking up in somebody else’s arms.”
His latest single – the title track of the new album ‘Black Friday’ was one of the highest new entries of late in the UK chart, propelling Tom into the top 100 most streamed artists in the world, with 2 million streams in its first day alone, and 20 million streams to date. A haunting and undeniably relatable ballad, ‘Black Friday’ is resonating in a major way, generating fan content on TikTok and 150 million views on the platform. The visceral connection audiences are having with the song is palpable as evidenced in this video of Odell performing the song in concert before its release. Tom gave a raw performance of the song on Late Night With Seth Meyers this week – his return visit to the show where he has performed multiple times.
