‘Young Heart’ the album from Birdy out now

“Birdy returns older, wiser and creatively thriving – a beautiful, poetic journey through heartbreak…a gorgeous album” NME

Birdy releases her long awaited fourth album ‘Young Heart’ which features the rousing piano ballad ‘Second Hand News’, Deepest Lonely ‘deeper, darker, territory… authentically haunting – The Guardian’ and the enchanting first single from the album ‘Surrender’.

‘Young Heart’ is quite the departure from Birdy’s previous album, 2015’s dramatic Beautiful Lies. Where Beautiful Lies was a fairy tale, Young Heart is a gritty realist portrait of the artist in pain, looking for the light. The songs on the album tussle between light and dark, between that vastness of space and the interior of home. The conflict between wanting to hide away and being compelled to go away, to new places and new experiences play out across the record. The album opener Voyager is a beautifully written song about the knowledge and pain that you need to end a relationship, but the no-mans land where your partner doesn’t know yet. From there, the record speaks of the fallout – the loneliness, the pain of missing the person she still loves, the acceptance of grief being central to love and loss, longing for travel but the pull of the familiarity of home.

Speaking of Young Heart, Birdy says: I’m so proud of this album, my last record was a lot more theatrical – there was a lot going on, it was a big production. Whereas this is quite stripped back – anything that didn’t need to be there, isn’t. There’s no decoration. This album just feels very personal – I’ve grown up a lot over the past five years and have experienced new things that have shaped my understanding of the world, but also of who I am as an artist. This album means a lot to me – I want to protect it.”

Following the success of Birdy’s recent one-off global livestream at Wilton’s Music Hall ‘a masterful show…had the feel of a festival headline set – The I’, Birdy will play an intimate special performance at o2 Forum Kentish Town Forum on 21st November, a venue she last played in 2014. The show will be Birdy’s first headline show since 2016, this intimate performance marks Birdy’s return to the stage, with many more dates to be announced in due course.
