David Bowie – You’re Not Alone review by Ryan Beardsley
If you love David Bowie, who doesn’t? You need to get yourself over to Kings Cross this summer and experience You’re Not Alone in the vastly impressive (not to mention air-conditioned) Lightroom.
The show is a unique journey through Bowie’s career, highlighting iconic performances, rare interviews, and in some cases material that has never seen the light of day, all brought together to offer new insight into one of Britain’s greatest visionaries.
Described as ‘both a multimedia spectacle and an intimate and revealing self-portrait,’ it’s clear that You’re Not Alone is a labour of love, as thousands of hours of footage have been trawled through to create an incredible snapshot of a once-in-a-lifetime cultural icon. Credit goes to Mark Grimmer and Tom Wexler for this phenomenal achievement.
Tonight there was an extra treat for the Bowie superfans as 6 eminent photographers were invited to have a nice chinwag with author and journalist Miranda Sawyer about some of their favourite collaborations with the great man.
Kevin Cummins, Tony McGee, Geoff McCormack, Richard Young, Denis O’Regan, and Chris Duffy were all allowed to choose their 3 favourite images, discuss how the shots came together, and offer a behind-the-scenes look at what David was really like. Once you got past the considerable name-dropping, there were some amazing tales to cherish, most notably from McCormack, who was a long-time band member and travelling companion.
Another highlight was Chris Duffy talking through how his late father had captured probably the most iconic of all images, the Aladdin Sane cover and how the photograph had almost transcended the man himself, become truly synonymous with the artist in that rarest of outcomes.
All in all, a fantastic night and I’ve already got my ticket booked for the You’re Not Alone show, for fans it’s an absolute must, and you won’t be disappointed.
