The Flaming Lips, the long-running American psychedelic rock band from Oklahoma City, delivered a characteristically spectacular performance at the historic Piece Hall on 23 July 2026, sharing a double bill with Scotland’s The Beta Band. Formed in 1983 by brothers Wayne and Mark Coyne along with bassist Michael Ivins, the band has evolved over four decades from noisy underground origins into one of alternative rock’s most inventive and visually ambitious acts. Wayne Coyne remains the sole founding member at the helm, known for his energetic frontman presence, elaborate stage productions, and a catalog blending existential themes with pop melodies. The group has earned three Grammy Awards and gold certification for Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (2002), while building a reputation for boundary pushing releases and legendary live shows featuring balloons, confetti, lasers, and inflatable props.
The Piece Hall, a Grade I listed Georgian cloth hall built in 1779 and reopened in 2017 after restoration, provided a striking architectural backdrop with its colonnaded courtyard. Doors opened at 6pm for the TK Maxx presents Live at The Piece Hall event, with The Flaming Lips taking the stage around 9pm for a roughly 90 minute set that ran until approximately 10:30pm.
The performance opened with the atmospheric “The Stars Are So Big… I Am So Small… Do I Stand a Chance?” before launching into highlights including both parts of “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots,” complete with giant inflatable pink robots and balloons filling the courtyard. Other tracks drawn from their catalogue featured “Pompeii am Götterdämmerung,” “The Spark That Bled,” “Vein of Stars,” “The Golden Path” (the Chemical Brothers collaboration), “She Don’t Use Jelly,” “It’s Summertime,” “Do You Realize??,” and “Race for the Prize.” The set also included a cover of Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” and newer material such as “Every Teardrop Cried.” The production incorporated confetti cannons, lasers, and oversized props against the historic stone setting, creating a vibrant, immersive spectacle.
The Flaming Lips continue to blend high concept visuals with emotional depth, maintaining their status as a unique force in rock music well into their fifth decade. This Halifax show exemplified their ability to transform venues into joyous, chaotic celebrations while touching on heavier themes. The evening reinforced The Piece Hall’s growing reputation as a premier outdoor concert destination in Yorkshire.
