Jamie Grey’s talent for crafting sad songs is a way of processing emotions: each one providing a way to help him start to heal from the issue at hand and, in the process, giving listeners something they can relate to that might also help them on their own journeys. That quality is particularly poignant in his brand new single ‘From Under My Feet’, which is already a fan favourite after he shared a sketch of the song two years ago. Listen HERE.
‘From Under My Feet’ is an intimate ballad, its stripped-back production providing the space for Jamie’s yearning vocal to deliver his tender lyricism with nowhere to hide. But for all its lovelorn devastation, the song takes on a different tone when it flows from piano/vocal sparsity into a richer, choral wall-of-sound. The heartache remains, but maybe there’s the feeling that the relationship needs to be resolved to move on.
The song was inspired, in part, by hearing that Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness had separated after 27 years of marriage. It somehow feels fitting that a song about slowly drifting apart took a meandering journey to finally be ready to be released into the world.
Jamie’s story into music is one of finally taking a chance. He worked in the finance world, but every time he saw a busker outside the office, he wondered what might’ve been had he committed to his dream instead. Despite the odds being stacked against him, he eventually quit his job and went for it – his initial time spent grinding around the pubs of the north-east. ‘The Voice’ turned out to be his big break, but it didn’t make him an overnight sensation – he failed to make it through the opening round. He returned to the pubs and battled to achieve his full potential, so when he returned the following year, he made the top eight of the live shows. A dream which seemed insurmountable was now underway.
