‘Ricky Martin’ unfolds as a mellow, hazy dream-pop ballad built on soft textures and a slow, drifting rhythm. Its gentle sound palette creates a warm, reflective atmosphere that mirrors the lingering intensity of a childhood crush, where memory feels slightly blurred but emotionally vivid.
Even if you don’t know the name Leroy Clampitt, you’ve almost certainly heard his work. He’s the production and songwriting mastermind and multi-instrumentalist behind some of the biggest pop music of the past decade. Now, he’s inviting listeners into his own wonderful world on debut album ‘Get Happy’, released via his own independent label, Sorry Susan Records.
With practically all the instruments and vocals across the album done by Leroy himself, ‘Get Happy’ traverses themes of love, work, burnout, the highs, the lows, and everything in between.
Speaking on the album, Leroy explains; “I was always very content – I still am – making music for other people, I don’t think that’ll ever change. But the ideas that you hear on this record were probably a bit too far out for the people I was working with.” Initially, Leroy was putting the songs together without any intention of releasing them, writing scraps of ideas while in the shower, cooking, travelling to and fro. Then a friend offered him a studio space away from Los Angeles for a week, and the album began to take shape. He continues, “It was a burst of inspiration, and that’s what I love about music… what I’ve learnt to love the most.”
