Last night, Deacon Blue delivered a strong performance at the historic Piece Hall in Halifax as part of their The Great Western Road Trip Rolls On tour. The first of two nights at the venue drew thousands of fans to the impressive Grade I listed outdoor space for an evening that celebrated the band’s extensive catalogue alongside newer material. Support came from The Lightning Seeds, whose set featured indie favourites such as “Pure,” “Sense,” and “You Showed Me,” along with a lively rendition of “Three Lions” that sparked a mass singalong and sent inflatable footballs bouncing across the crowd.
Deacon Blue took to the stage at 9:00pm and performed for approximately 95 minutes. Their set opened with a strong sequence of recent and classic tracks including “Late ’88,” “Queen of the New Year,” “Wages Day,” “Much Too Close to Love,” “Loaded,” and “Your Town.” They mixed in songs from their 2025 album The Great Western Road, such as the title track, “People Come First,” and “City of Love.” Standout moments included enduring staples like “Twist and Shout,” “The Hipsters,” “Real Gone Kid,” “The Believers,” “Dignity,” and “Fergus Sings the Blues.” The band also performed “When Will You (Make My Telephone Ring) / Have You Seen Her?” and closed with “That’s What We Can Do” and a cover of “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again.”
Fans enjoyed a well-balanced show that spanned the band’s career. The Piece Hall’s distinctive Georgian architecture and courtyard provided a striking and atmospheric backdrop under the summer evening sky. The band were in strong form, and the crowd responded enthusiastically to both familiar anthems and fresh material.
The concert highlighted Deacon Blue’s enduring appeal more than four decades after they first formed. The band return to The Piece Hall for their second sold-out show tonight.
