Marr’s jangly, intricate guitar work became a defining element of the band’s sound and helped shape British indie rock. He was also a member of The The and Modest Mouse.

Marr released his debut solo album The Messenger in 2013, followed by Playland (2014), Call the Comet (2018), and Fever Dreams Pts 1 & 2 (2022). His solo material blends guitar-driven rock with atmospheric and melodic elements, often reflecting his continued evolution as a songwriter and performer. He has toured extensively as a solo artist while occasionally reuniting for select performances of The Smiths’ material in his live sets.Throughout his career, Marr has been widely regarded for his innovative guitar techniques and contribution to British music. He remains an active recording and touring artist, with a catalogue that spans more than four decades. His performances typically combine high-energy playing with a deep connection to his Manchester roots.
