As their 30th anniversary approaches in 2024, the current resurgence of Shed Seven is building up to become even bigger than their mid-’90s heyday. Huge pre-orders ahead of the January 5th release of their sixth album ‘A Matter of Time’ could result in it becoming their highest charting album ever (their best to date being #7 for the ‘Going For Gold’ compilation), while their two July 2024 anniversary shows at York Museum Gardens are already sold-out after 75% of all tickets were snapped up during the pre-sale’s opening three days.
Now Shed Seven’s rebirth is again boosted as they share their brand new single ‘Talk of the Town’. From its anthemic hook to its call-and-response backing vocals through to its central spiralling guitar riff and propulsive rhythms, it packages everything that fans love about the band into a song that instantly takes its place amongst the band’s classic hits. It’s full of personality too, especially with its defiant kiss-off to a love interest that’s full of good-humoured Rick Witticisms. As with the rest of the upcoming album, ‘Talk of the Town’ was produced by the Grammy Award-winning Youth (The Verve, Pink Floyd) and mixed by Cenzo Townshend (Florence + The Machine, Inhaler).
Rick says, “‘Talk Of The Town’ is another classic sounding Sheds song. Rip roaring guitars chime along with the solid rhythm section whilst the chorus is made for arenas and stadiums. Lyrically it’s an anti-love song but with a comedic edge, especially with lines like, ‘If I was cremated you’d turn in your grave, if I stood still you’d start a Mexican wave.’ The crux of the song is not really seeing eye to eye but still being the talk of the town. It’s got the makings of quickly becoming a fan favourite and a Shed Seven staple in future sets.”
‘Talk of The Town’ further underlines how ‘A Matter of Time’ pulls together Shed Seven’s varying strengths and styles into one package. The album has also been previewed with the chiming, sun-kissed indie-rock of ‘Kissing California’, the soaring rock ‘n’ soul shimmer of ‘F:K:A’, a fresh take on Madchester vibes with the help of scene legend Rowetta on ‘In Ecstacy’, and a new anthemic slowburner in the shape of ‘Starlings’. The rest of the album lives up to the standards that its singles have set, and includes further collabs with Peter Doherty and Laura McClure.
