K-pop’s ever-evolving artists TOMORROW X TOGETHER unveiled their 8th mini album 7TH YEAR: A Moment of Stillness in the Thorns today, alongside the music video for lead single “Stick With You.”
7TH YEAR: A Moment of Stillness in the Thorns marks the quintet’s highly anticipated first release as they enter their seventh year together since renewing their contract with BIGHIT MUSIC, a subsidiary of HYBE. Capturing emotions shaped by uncertainty, the album is one of their most personal and self-reflective works to date, translating the anxiety and questions they have faced into music 7TH YEAR: A Moment of Stillness in the Thorns features six tracks: “Bed of Thorns,” the lead single “Stick With You,” “Take Me to Nirvana (feat. Vinida Weng),” “So What,” “21st Century Romance,” and “Dream of Mine.”
The lead single “Stick With You” is an electro pop track built around an addictive, high-impact chorus, featuring a vintage 909 drum sound infused with elements of techno punk. Capturing the fragile tension of a relationship nearing its end, the song portrays the emotional chasm between one who is ready to move on and another who is unable to let go. The poignant struggle of holding on to a loved one mirrors the band’s persistence to hold onto their dreams, signaling a powerful new chapter as they enter their seventh year.
The music video offers a compelling narrative of a character grappling with emotional turbulence and anxiety. By the end of the video, the members come to realize that the root of their turmoil lies within themselves. The track’s emotional depth, alongside the appearance of acclaimed Korean actress Jun Jong Seo, enhances the film’s immersive storytelling.
Throughout the album, the band utilizes the metaphor of ‘thorns’ to articulate inner uncertainty and emotional upheaval. The opening track, “Bed of Thorns”, draws inspiration from the idiom “You’ve made your bed, now lie in it,” delivering a message about fully embracing the consequences of the members’ own choices. The third track “Take Me to Nirvana (feat. Vinida Weng)” explores the liberation that follows after letting go of uncertainty, while “So What” clears out the anxieties and doubts the members had gone through with a refreshing blend of candor and humor. “21st Century Romance” reflects their determination to follow their inner voice amidst the meaningless noise of the modern world, and the album is concluded by “Dream of Mine,” a track that courageously embraces the unknown.
