The Drill presented by Breach Theatre – HOME Manchester, Thu 14 – Sat 16 June 2018

Breach Theatre make their third visit to HOME with The Drill, which puts the spotlight into anti-terror training and emergency preparedness.

Following sell-out visits to HOME with The Beanfield in March/April 2016 and Tank in May 2017, award-winning multimedia theatre-makers Breach Theatre return to HOME in Manchester with The Drill, on Thu 14 – Sat 16 June 2018, an investigation into anti-terror training which explores political anxieties and emergency preparedness.

Having previously examined real-life events using performance to re-enact the past, in The Drill, Breach take a theatrical look this time for events in the future, using safety drills and emergency response procedures. The Drill follows the lives of three individuals living in an undisclosed city overcome by their everyday anxieties – from the potential for a Grindr hook-up to go horribly wrong, to frets of drifting into marriage, motherhood and materialism.

Mashing up documentary film and narratives devised using extensive research by the company, The Drill examines what today’s disaster education says about our anxieties around security and terrorism. From workshops in workplaces to large-scale scenarios using actors, fake wounds and explosives, what kinds of futures are we being encouraged to imagine and prepare for? And how do these ‘rehearsals’ bleed into our off-stage lives? The Drill is co-commissioned by Battersea Arts Centre, The Bike Shed Theatre, Birmingham Repertory Theatre, New Diorama Theatre and HOME, and supported by Arts Council England.
