The long wait for a new Beck album — punctuated with multiple singles, collaborations and tours — is over as of today, September 18, with the release of Ride Lonesome via Capitol Records.
Ride Lonesome’s release is also marked by the premiere of a striking new video of the album’s second song, “Run Away.” Directed by Mikai Karl, produced by Ryan Smale and starring Golden Globe-winning actor Tadanobu Asano (Shogun, Thor: Ragnarok, Ichi the Killer), “Run Away” sees the sublime piano and guitar based melodies of the Ride Lonesome standout scoring interwoven narratives of lives on a parallel tracks set against the compelling backdrop of a Tokyo cityscape. Ride Lonesome owes a measure of its brand new yet warmly familiar atmosphere to the contributions of musicians with whom Beck recorded Sea Change, Morning Phase and Mutations — Smokey Hormel, Joey Waronker, Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Roger Joseph Manning Jr., and Jason Falkner — reunited at Room B at United Studios in Hollywood. Godrich, who had worked on Sea Change and Mutations, returned to mix the album. In the decade or so since 2015 GRAMMY Album of the Year winner Morning Phase was recorded, Beck and the band observed a noticeable evolution and deepening of their performance and chemistry, honed by decades of working together. He recalls, “While we were revisiting a musical and physical place, it also felt like we were finding new sounds and emotional textures along the way.”
Ride Lonesome’s release comes days ahead of the September 22 kick-off of its namesake tour at the Santa Barbara Bowl. The tour will see Beck digging deep into Ride Lonesome forebears Sea Change, Morning Phase and Mutations alongside future classics from the new album, bringing them all to life in intimate and ornate theaters across the continent.
