New Zealand-born, LA-based, Leroy Clampitt’s Get Happy arrives as a vivid, expansive, and heartfelt body of work. After years spent working with others to actualise their creative visions, Leroy looked inwards, and over the course of a few weeks, created something remarkable. With the majority of instruments and vocals heard across the album all performed by Leroy himself, Get Happy traverses themes of love, work, burnout, the highs, the lows, and all of life that takes place in between.
Focus-track, ‘The Brighter Side of Life’ is steeped in a timeless kind of romance. A piano-led love song, it draws on the warmth of classic pop, blending Beatles-esque melodies with the heartfelt charm of Harry Nilsson. Soaring group vocals and wandering lap steel guitar wrap around the song as it celebrates the quiet mystery of love.
The album also includes ‘Ricky Martin’, with a soft texture and atmosphere that stirs nostalgia and mirrors the lingering intensity of a childhood crush. ‘Sick Day’, where deep in the middle of producing for other artists and feeling totally overwhelmed, Leroy explored the concept of taking sick days when he was a kid, and how restorative that could be.
The warm, textured ‘Easy Daisy’, which features tenor saxophone and flute courtesy of fellow GRAMMY multiple nominee Jacob Scesney. As well as Leroy’s debut solo single, ‘I’m Going To Die’, where he delves into the idea of mortality, released alongside a music video made by visual collaborator Samuel Kristofski (Tame Impala, The Rare Bird).
Even if you don’t yet know the name Leroy Clampitt, you’ve almost certainly heard his work. He’s the production, songwriting and multi-instrumentalist mastermind behind some of the biggest pop music of the past decade, with Lily Allen, Madison Beer, Sabrina Carpenter, Laufey, Ashe, Justin Bieber, FLO, Rachel Chinouriri, FINNEAS, RAYE, and many more, proud to call him a collaborator.
Now with his debut solo album, he adds another layer to his artistry, cementing his place as a multifaceted musician with affecting stories to tell, and ideas constantly in bloom. He’s invited listeners into his own world with Get Happy, and it’s an extraordinary place to be.
