Released today for the first time, ‘Grey Lagoons – 1971 Demo (original title: The Bogus Man Part 2)’ provides an exciting first glimpse of the unreleased recordings inside the For Your Pleasure Super Deluxe Edition. Recorded in the summer of 1971, the demo formed part of the homemade tape that first brought Roxy Music to the attention of the music press. It captures the band’s earliest chemistry as Ferry’s accomplished lyrics of pure imagism are backed by the vocal harmonies of Andy Mackay and Brian Eno, Graham Simpson’s propulsive bass, Roger Bunn’s rocking guitar work, and a howling sax solo.
The Super Deluxe Edition also premieres two additional unheard recordings of the song, ‘Grey Lagoons – Air Studios Outtake’ and ‘Grey Lagoons – Live at Montreux, April 1973’. Two accompanying BBC performance clips reveal how dramatically the song evolved in a matter of months, with the band already pushing into the unexplored sonic territory that defines their enduring influence to this day.
