Four decades into their career, indie favourites James show no signs of slowing day. Heading towards a summer arena & festival tour, the band released their eighteenth studio album, ‘Yummy’, this past Friday and, while still quintessentially a James album, the album finds the band sounding fresher and more fired-up than ever.
This should come as no surprise to loyal fans of the indie band. Having had a slew of massive hits in the 90s, the band could have taken the easy route and lived off the back of those hits. However, while songs like “Sit Down” are inked into the James story and are an essential part of any James setlist, they’re not the be all and end all for the band.
Furthermore, rather than being a band who have grown weary of the hits, the touring, the recording and all the other trappings of being in a successful band, you get the feeling that James have as much to say now as they did four decades ago.
Whereas their last album saw the band traversing uncertain pandemic waters for the industry, it was also a period of personal turmoil for frontman Tim Booth, turmoil which he explored in the material of the album.‘Yummy’ however is a different kettle of fish as we found out when we spoke to guitarist Saul.
Of the opinion that the album was more politically-charged this time around, the guitarist told us how it was to be expected giving the state of the country and all that is going on around us.
