Ethereal storyteller Wendy Bevan unveils new single “Fragile Times” taken from her forthcoming album, Alone With The Unknown, due September 18th and produced by Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran. Listen to “Fragile Times” here and pre-order the album here.
The release follows last month’s lead single, “Innocence,” and arrives fresh from Wendy’s biggest UK outdoor performance to date at BST Hyde Park, where she shared the bill with Duran Duran, Scissor Sisters and Nile Rodgers.
Produced by Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran, “Fragile Times” blends nostalgic synthesizers, Bevan’s hypnotic and evocative vocals, and polished electronic production into a lush, sweeping soundscape that further defines Bevan’s distinctive fusion of gothic pop and darkwave.
Filmed in the remote, medieval mountain town of Montenero, Italy, the video for “Fragile Times” (watch here) draws inspiration from surrealist film maker Maya Deren’s, Meshes of the Afternoon and the classic images of Herb Ritts taken in the 90’s for Versace, using a veil dress to create a sculpture like, unidentifiable figure with the body.
In Fragile Times, a lightweight black, sheer fabric blows dramatically in the mountain wind, set against the vast ancient landscape and harsh stone, creating a surrealist shape that both becomes the figure itself, sometimes following the anonymous walker and sometimes leading them, engulfing the body and face in mystery while creating an architectural, unidentifiable but powerful, fluid form in the air.
The veil represents how sometimes we cannot see the beauty of this world before us, its fragility and ever changing shape resists identity or solid structure; echoing the human spirit, as a shapeless orb, carrying weightless memory and time.
Produced by Nick Rhodes, Alone With The Unknown explores themes of connection, commitment, love, and the unknown spaces between certainty and desire. The album also builds upon Bevan’s creative partnership with Rhodes, following their acclaimed Astronomia project released in 2021
